What Drives You?
Is it a need for speed? A desire for recognition? A desire to change the worldthe great big world or perhaps your own little corner of the world? Where does it all begin for you?
For most of us, it begins with a thought – sometimes very conscious, sometimes unbidden. But its always a thought. You come across a situation that bothers you, a process or just the general state of something; and you think “Oh! if it was me, this is what I would do about it” or “If I could, this is what I would do differently.” Which is why most personal development coaches say “if you can think it, then you can be it” or “if you can think it, you can create it.”
We recognize that we are what we think, and subsequently, that is what comes to be, sometimes even more profoundly when we actually speak it. It is inherently that which we do not see, that we think first, a step towards creation if you may, then we express it…in speech. It could be a whisper, a curse, sometimes a hushed sharing of a joyful thought….then comes the action to follow. A jump in the air, a shaken fist, a pat on the back. The action! And it is complete! Then the cycle of life begins again, or continues…. Either which way, it is as it always is, as it should be; a thought, then a word, then a deed!
We, therefore, need to be deliberate….from our thoughts and into our mouths, and then we can do. After all, from the overflow of our hearts, our mouths speak, and two scriptures touch on this:
Luke 6:35 (AMP) “The [intrinsically] good man produces what is good and honorable and moral out of the good treasure [stored] in his heart; and the [intrinsically] evil man produces what is wicked and depraved out of the evil [in his heart]; for his mouth speaks from the overflow of his heart.”
Proverbs 4:23 (MSG) “Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts.”
These Scriptures talk about what comes out of the heart, where the heart is construed to be the core of one’s being. There are two critical elements to these Scriptures. The first is VALUE. We usually guard what we consider to be valuable. In this regard then, it follows that if we are guarding the heart, it must be valuable or a treasure. The second element is that of being a SOURCE – it is a wellspring or the source of life, and usually in overflow.
The heart is also where our beliefs originate and rest. The heart is where our faith and hope are resident… so if we need to keep watch, it is so that we protect our beliefs and our values.
To circle back: What drives you? What is in your heart? What are you thinking of? What are you speaking? What are you doing? What are you investing in? Perhaps the challenge for you is…. “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
